BLECK!

We went to Fireworks for Nathan's birthday dinner. I had heard from a friend that it wasn't that great but, couldn't remember what she said they didn't like about it, so we decided to just go try it. It was a disappointment. Our waitress tried too hard and didn't pull through. They have complimentary corn bread "upon request" which means you only get it if you ask for it, TWICE. Then when you finally get it, your dinner has already come but, it's ok because the corn bread is just two tiny squares that are hard and crusty. Bleck!

Nathan worked on a paper all day, which is due at midnight, so I don't have much time to blog...I'm sorry! I'm a loser!

But, Dell dude come and replaced my mobo. He was really nice and worked quickly and totally tore my whole laptop apart, right in front of me. It was crazy weird. And he put it all back together...still not working. So, he ordered a new processor and said it should come in tomorrow and that he's pretty sure that's the problem. Wahoo! I got a new mobo and I'm gettin' a new processor all because I'm so smart. Hopefully it will come quickly and hopefully he'll be able to come and fix it once and for all!

We love you all!!!!

Happy Birthday To my My Renaissance Man

Nathan says he is a Jack of all trades but a master of none. I think the fact that he tries to be knowledgeable in so many things is very impressive. He is always thinking of ways we can learn new things so that we can be more self sufficient and self reliant.
One day I think he will be a master of many trades.

He is good at a lot of things, I'm only going to highlight a few.

Electronics - He got his bachelors degree in Computers and Electronic Technology. This makes him a very handyman around the house. When we lived with my mom he fixed her light in the pantry closest that had a short. While we were engaged he fixed my mom's door bell, my sister's door bell and his mom's door bell. They had all been on the fritz or had not worked at all. (I have pictures of him fixing his mom's door bell, I will add them later, once my comp is fixed)

He has built his own computer and kept his old laptop running WAY beyond it's life expectancy. He likes to hold on to old electronics for parts. Just after we moved here we found that his receiver didn't work anymore. He took it apart thinking he could fix it and probably could have if he had the right part. He reluctantly parted with it, mostly because it was so big. If we had more room, I'm sure he would have kept it for parts. (Picture of him working on our receiver and Marley helping.)

Cooking - Nathan loves to cook. He especially likes trying new recipes and then making his own delicious variations. His best and favorite dish is Jambalaya. (Picture of him cooking in our Provo kitchen)

This is Nate serving up some Carmel Pecan Cheese Cake, my favorite!

Woodworking - We are putting off buying furniture, not just because we can't afford it right now, but everything I talk about needing or wanting he says he would like to make. He made a cedar chest for his older sister when she graduated from high school. He made his Grandmother a computer cabinet. He has made a lamp, including the lamp shade. He made a jewelry box and a spoon display rack for his mother. He made a rope maker and he has made various bowls and picture frames. (picture of the VERY nice podium he made for the Boy Scouts of America Orem office.)

Gardening - Nathan LOVES to garden and this is one of the main ways he wants to be self reliant. This is one of the main ways I feel like it is absolutely doable...well, once we have a back yard. When we lived with my mom, she let us make her garden bigger. Nathan loved having that big garden...too bad we only got to enjoy 12 ears of corn before we moved to Nebraska. Someday, hopefully this summer! We will have our own garden.

Being a dad!
He is such a great dad!

Sewing - He made a monster when he was in High School. It is so cute and funny looking. We almost brought it back to Neb with us this summer...one day it will live with us.

Quilting: he has a perfect hand quilting stitch. His aunt and sister always want him to help with their quilts.

Ok, Nathan doesn't play the piano...but we both wish we did. One day we hope to buy a piano and encourage our kids to be diligent in their lessons.
(A piano is the type of thing that Nathan wishes he could make himself and sometimes thinks he could, I have to snap him back to reality. Doesn't hurt to have a righteous desire like that though.)

"Playing" the piano was his "talent" for the Mr. Hillcrest 7th ward Pageant (our singles ward). He actually pushed play on a CD player and pretended to play. I thought it was clever and very funny.
Sports - His favorite sport is Ultimate Frisbee. He is also very good at Basketball and played on the high school team. He ran track and played on the high school football team too. He loves to rock climb and even has all the equipment for it, just gotta move back to where they actually have mountains and rocks to climb.

This is him playing kickball in a Jack Sparrow costume.
This is not how he proposed, but I thought this was a good picture to show his silly side.
When we were engaged he drove all the way to California just so I could ride back to Utah with him. He hates driving.
He loves to play in the snow.
And, he is oh so very handsome.

Happy 30th Birthday Nathan!

Julie Is Probably So Mad At Me....

Julie wants my posts up each day before mid-morning. She hates waiting all day and having to keep checking back. Now that we are down to one computer, it's harder to do. SORRY!!!! I'm trying to get ahead...but, I want the pictures that are on my computer!!! Baahhh!

Here we go with what she called Sunday Thoughts. Hers were better than mine. Nonetheless, here they are....

I'm an early to bed, early to rise kind of girl and Nate's a late to bed, late to rise kind of guy. We both are swayed by each others tendencies and lately we have been a bad mix of both, late to bed early to rise.

I think I tend to like to stay up late, as of late, because I can get so much done when Marley is asleep. And then I still gotta get up to take care of her when she gets up. It kinda messes me up as far as being rested....or not rested is a better way to say it.

We try to keep Marley pretty steady with bedtime around 7 and wake up around 7. Last night she had a rough time going to bed. She often cries for a little bit and then plays for about 30 minutes and then crashes. Often times she actually crashes in her bed, occasionally she's on the floor. Last night she scream cried for a long time! We tried to refrain from going in very often but, it was unusual behavior and we didn't know what the problem was. We even looked up stuff on the Internet and read in a big book we have about child development. There was a lot of conflicting suggestions and information.

She cries right by the door but, when we go in she always climbs right back into bed. She knows that's where she is supposed to be. We finally decided we'd both go in, not say a word, let her climb back into bed and then we would just sit in there and she what she would do. She climbed in, and surprisingly calmed down pretty quickly and fell asleep within about 5 minutes. After 5 minutes Nathan left. I waited 5 more minutes just to make sure she was out. I wonder how long that technique will work...or if we will even need to do it again? Children change so often, it's amazing and sometimes frustrating.

That was a long story to tell you that after all that, I didn't want ANYTHING to wake up Marley! However, around 3:30AM I was awoken by multiple fire engine sirens. This isn't too unusual since we live fairly close to the Bethany fire department, but there were so many and they sounded so close. As my eyes opened to strobe lights filling our room I was instantly alarmed. I got out of bed, it was COLD, and peeked out the window.

Three fire engines and six cop cars surrounded the building to the west of us (within or complex). Many of the tenants were outside, including some children and toddlers and they looked cold!!! My heart was not full of patriotism...I was scared and concerned. One of the engines ended up leaving and shortly after an ambulance showed up. I could see no flames or smoke from where I was observing so, I thought maybe someone was hurt...but why would they evacuate everyone? I watched until around 4 and nothing happened. They eventually let everyone back in and the engines left.

The funny thing is that even though I put my glasses on, my eyes kept playing tricks on me. I kept seeing the same guy periodically walk into the building. He was short and stalky and he had a big funny hat on. From where I was and how my eyes were performing it looked like a big fleece puffy hat with snow on it. It also kinda looked like a jester hat? I finally realized it was fire fighters and what I was construing in my tired brain as a "funny hat" was actually their helmet. AND it was probably not the same guy going in periodically it was probably different guys. It was a weird experience. If I ever find out what happened, I'll let you know.

Marley never woke up! Phew!

*******

Nate has had one last day to be 29.

*******

I realized some more names that I call Marley that I failed to post in the Marley P. Pants Shickadance post. They are variations of Punkie but I say them all the time...I wonder how I forgot them?

Punxsutawney - you know like the ground hog Punxsutawney Phil, they base the weather on.

and

Punkie Doodle

*********

We have been turning the heater on so much that I was thinking that it's too bad we can't buy energy in bulk. If you use MORE energy you get a discount! That would be awesome!

*********

Quick question: We like breakfast, firm believers that's it's the most important meal of the day, but it's hard to think of a variety. We're also not big fans of cereal, though we do resort to it when we are pressed for time. So,what is your favorite thing to have for breakfast?

********

Another thing I forgot to mention, this one was when I posted about Christmas Music. I used to hate the song Feliz Navidad because it's so repetative and it would get stuck in my head. It doesn't bother me as much anymore. Nathan used to think they said, "Fleas on my dog!" He was always so confused about that Christmas song that talked about fleas on the dog.

********

Marley saw Santa on Friday. She sat on his lap and screamed the whole time. It was sad and funny. Pictures to come in a later post. Nathan thinks it might have gone better if he had introduced them first instead of just throwing her on his lap and then walking away. Funny!

********

Nathan never liked sitting on Santa's lap because of his beard. He couldn't read his lips so he never knew what he was saying. He is sure that every time Santa asked if he was a good boy, he would just start rattling off a list of stuff he wanted for Christmas. And when Santa was asking what he wanted he's sure he would just say "Yes!"

*******

One last Sunday Thought. Have you ever sat in front of the Cowardly Lion in church? We do almost every Sunday.

********

Ok, one more. Marley has one silver eye lash. Weird huh?

My puter pooted out on me.... :-(

So, last, we came home from our ward Christmas Party (which was so fun!) and Nate sits down to use my laptop and it won't turn on. I wanted to cry. Long story short, I'm the smartest woman alive!!! Okay, maybe that's too short.

Basically after troubleshooting, doing everything suggested on the Dell site and then chatting with a Dell support dude online, we find that I need a new mobo...that's mother board in computer nerd lingo. Nathan taught me.

Now for the reason why I'm the smartest woman alive...when I bought my laptop in 2004, I paid a little extra for a 6 year warranty. HA! Free mother board comin' my way. Nathan said he never would have paid for a 6 year warranty but he is SO glad that I did!

Local Dell dude will call us to set up a time so he can come and replace it for us. Suh-weeet!

Since Nathan can tell we will probably have to replace the CPU next, we paid the Dell chat dude some mula and extended the warranty for another year! Whoooop!

So, for the next couple of days...no pictures. BOOOOOO! Well, I'll see what I can do about downloading pics onto Nate's computer.

Side note: Once me and Julie took an institute class together and the teacher called computers puters. It was hilarious!!!

Another side note: Today I get to shadow Becky Anderson, the photographer I blogged about a few days ago. She is taking infant portraits! I'm excited! Someday I want to have a little side hobby photography business. Better start learning my stuff.

Christmas Music

My Aunt Kathy and Sister Julie have both blogged about Christmas Music…so, I thought I would give my 2 cents.

It really is just 2 cents because their posts made me realize I need to start collecting great Christmas music!!! I think we only have one MAYBE two CD’s of good Christmas music.

Let me start with throwing out two that make my skin crawl.

#1

Christmas (baby, please come home)
This song makes me cringe when I hear it. I like it, it’s a great song, but when it comes on I have to go through a whole process of memory suppression before I can enjoy it.

I had to sing it in a high school play and a soft wispy, non-solo voice like mine, trying to belt and beg like Darlene Love or Mariah Carey, it just doesn’t work…at all!

In fact, the father of one of my dear friends video taped me singing this song so I could show my sister Julie who was a nanny in New York at the time. For my senior trip, I went to visit her and I played her the tape (you will NEVER find that tape!). I was SO embarrassed that I hid my head in my pillow case, squirming and cringing and trying to plug my ears with the pillow, through the whole viewing.

#2

Christmas Shoes
I LOTHE this song! My LEAST classy companion on my mission, who shall remain nameless, kept this song on repeat through the whole Christmas season. Talk about a sappy, pathetic, song designed just to make people cry. If you’ve never heard it, don’t look it up, it’s detestable. (Sorry for those who like this song…really, I feel sorry for you.)

That’s it for the skin crawling…now for two that I love!

#1
The Marvelous Toy
I’m not even sure it’s an actual Christmas song but they sometimes play it amongst the Christmas songs on the radio, so I’m counting it! John Denver has a good rendition of it but, the first time I heard it, it was on record and sung by Peter, Paul and Mary. I love all the harmonizing and all the fun sounds they include.

#2

Barbara Streisand’s version of Jingle Bells!
Both Kathy (my aunt) and Julie mentioned this one and Julie posted a video of it…I love it! She sings it in a hurry and then nice and slow and then in a hurry. It’s great!

One that I wish I had….but, probably never will.

Our ward youth choir, when I was in high school sang words to Pacelbel’s Canon and I always sing it at the top of my lungs in the car…when I’m alone or if it’s just me and Marley. I think that version is the most beautiful version I’ve ever heard. I wish I had a recording of it. It gets pretty interesting when I sing it alone, because it’s a canon; I have to sing multiple parts all at once. Here are some of the lyrics, to refresh your memory, if you were part of that youth choir.

Born this day in David’s City
Lay within a lowly stall
Was Christ the Lord Emanuel
The Prince of Peace the Great Redeemer

Alleluia
A-lay-lu-ia
Glory be to God
Glory be to God
Mortal flesh awake
Wake and adore Him
Come adore the son of man
The worthy lamb of God

Ahhhh-laaaay-luu-ia
Ahhhhh-laaaaay-luuu-ia

(fast part)
Glory to God in the Highest
And peace be on earth
and good will to mankind
Who on earth dwell
Glory to God in the Highest
And peace be on earth
and good will to mankind
Who on earth dwell

The lyrics alone do not do it justice…but the canon AND the lyrics….heavenly.

That’s my 2 cents and I’m stinkin’ to it!

Memorial Service

This morning, Marley and I went to the memorial service of
Tom Hendrickson.
Tom was our maintenance man until he retired this past August.
We went to his retirement party, remember that?
The bad news about his retirement is that he had to retire because he had cancer AND
he didn't get to enjoy retirement for very long.
There is comfort in knowing that he is in a better place and he is free from illness. And one day his Spirit will be reunited with his body, only then, his body will be perfect and strong again.
His daughters and sons-in-law and grandchildren will miss him dearly. At the service they had a slide show of his life. He was a happy active man! He was an official member of the Girl Scouts. One of the pictures in the slide show was of him playing Barbi's with his grand daughter. What a great Father and Grandfather!
He seemed to be a great husband too. Judy and Tom had been married for 45 years! That seems to be pretty rare these days. Their children only recall their parents having one fight/disagreement/tiff and they recall it had something to do with home decor and maybe some wall paper.
They are sweet sweet people. They are hard workers and show genuine concern for others.
We will miss Tom!
At the end of the service the pianist played, "God Be With You Til We Meet Again."
I love that song.

Fwappy Fwanksgwiving

The post title is supposed to throw you off from realizing that this is
a Thanksgiving post almost 2 weeks late. My Bad!
I spent ALL morning, on Thanksgiving, completely cleaning our apartment.
I was secretly hoping that my family, who had informed me they were spending their Thanksgiving in Moab and Arches, were secretly coming to L-town to spend it with us!
They never showed. But, they never said they were going to, so shame on me!
But, we had one DANG clean apartment!
Confession: I don't like turkey. Many of you already knew that, so it's not really a shocker.
But, for those of you who didn't know, there you have it.
For our first Thanksgiving, Nathan and I were on our honeymoon.
We ate at the Pioneer Lodge in Springdale, UT, just outside Zion's National Park.
We had one of the most lovely Prime Rib dinners there ever was.
We liked it so much we decided that whenever we are not around our family for Thanksgiving we will go out for Prime Rib.
Last year we didn't plan ahead so we ended up going to a gross place that is now out of business and didn't even have Prime Rib.
This year we planned ahead, by calling around to see who would be open, what their hours would be for Thanksgiving and if they would be serving Prime Rib.
It came down to only TWO places that would be open on Thanksgiving and only ONE would be serving Prime Rib. So, we made a reservation and enjoyed our Thanksgiving feast at Misty's!
I was hesitant to be excited about this place, because I once knew a girl named Misty and she smelled. Misty was actually a very sad situation of a little girl. I think our whole family felt sorry for her...and I think we still do, even though we haven't seen her for over 20 years.
I wonder what ever became of poor Misty.
Nonetheless, we made our reservation and we went!

And they had this beautiful crest carved into to wood in their waiting room.

Marley and I felt like the Queen and Princess that we are as we sat in that cute little waiting room. (check out her crossed legs)
And look at the booth!
Half Circle, candle lit, leather, booths!
Fancy!
They kept our drinks full!
I mean, after we took one drink our waitress would run over, pick up our cups and take them to the bar to be topped off.
I'm not exaggerating very much either.
And they served us bread on a little cutting board.
Nathan ordered the Prime Rib King's Cut. (this was it's name on the menu!)
Becky ordered the Prime Rib Queen's Cut. (this too was it's name on the menu!)
Marley ordered the child's spaghetti. (i know, anti-climatic)
My Queen's Cut came with soup and I ordered the Sea Food Bisque.
It was SO delicious!
Nathan's King Cut came with soup and he ordered French Onion.
They put the soup in the bowl, then a round piece of bread that sits on the top of the soup, right at the rim of the cup, and then they melt cheese over the top, which seals the cup closed.
French Onion soup sealed with melted cheese, Mmmmmmm.
It looked so good I made the King let me try it!
It was SO delicious!
Blurry but, you get the idea.
We forgot a bib for Marley so we tied a napkin around her neck, like a neckerchief.

They had this lovely decorative display.
Red and green grapes that lit up!
It was pretty.

And after the feast, Marley was swung by her parents.

There was a cold cold wind that day.

Misty's you were a pleasant surprise, though we will never dine with you again, because we just can't afford that royal treatment.

We didn't dare order our Thanksgiving pie there, for fear we'd brake the bank.
Luckily we knew that would be the case so we signed up for the Thanksgiving feast held at the church, JUST FOR THE PIE!!!
And they did not disappoint!
Pecan Pie, our favorite!
Here's the small but festive group.

It was a great and thankful day!
You are ALL invited to join us for homemade Prime Rib, next year!
