My Turn To Be Creative! (Part 1 - I made a cute quilt)

I've never thought of myself as being a creative person but this has been my year to branch out and work on my talents to create!

We asked for a sewing machine for Christmas last year and we got it!
And you know from previous posts that the sewing machine wasn't just a gift for me.
From there, creating just sort of happened. I started taking advantage of every learning opportunity.
Craft blogs used to overwhelm me and I mentioned that to a friend and she said,
"Oh no! They inspire me!"
So, I changed my outlook on looking at other people's creations and decided to look at them as inspiration instead.
So, in a series of blogs I thought I would show you some of the things I made this year.

I made a CUTE quilt.

I have never actually made a quilt before, so this was pretty much improvised.
The top is 6.5 inch squares of 5 different pink and brown patterns. Sewn together they are 6 inch squares.
I randomly sewed strips of ribbon across some of the squares.

The bottom is fleece and it has no batting because I thought the fleece would be warm enough. However, in the next one I think I would put some really thin batting in there, just to help it pocket air better.

The binding (learned that word during this project!) is 1.5 inches with mitered corners!

Marley has a store bought blanket with this kind of binding but I didn't know how to do it, so Nathan found a number of videos explaining and showing how to do it and then we figured it out together! He even hand sewed half of it on for me.

I don't really like tying quilts, mostly because I'm not fond of yarn, so I tied it with pink embroidery floss. It turned out really cute!

And though it took a lot of work and experimenting and I learned a lot and got attached to it, I gave it away to my dear friend Shalantie.
Look! I even "wrapped" it craftily!

I have enough squares to do another one. Exciting!!!

Those mitered edges...beastly for me. I, fortunately, had some detailed instructions from the local craft store. They actually weren't that detailed. I had to go back and have the fabric person demonstrate with her sample mitered edge piece.

I love the colors and such a great job! You are a natural. I received a quilt for my wedding and it was tied with embroidery floss and that was when I thought I maybe had a shot at learning quilting. So many ways to do it, and so much fun trying new techniques.
